Down the Rabbit Hole

Grace was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister in the pew and of having nothing to do,

When suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her, dropping a book in her lap.

Grace started to her feet, and burning with curiosity, ran just in time to see the rabbit pop down a large hole under the pulpit.

In another moment down went Grace after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

Grace had not a chance to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

She had plenty of time as she went down to look about her, and to wonder what was going to happen next.

Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end?

When suddenly, thump! thump! down she came upon a heap of blogs, and the fall was over.

She looked back, but it was all dark.

There were doors all round, but they were all locked.

She walked sadly down the middle, wondering how she was ever to get out again.

She knelt down and looked along the passage into the loveliest community you ever saw.

How she longed to get out of that dark hall, and wander about among those bright smiles and those cool people,

"Oh, how I wish I could be part of an authentic community! I think I could, if I only knew how to begin."

For, you see, so many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Grace had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.

Well written. And it has so much meaning behind it. What's the best part is that it leaves you with complete hope at the end. Thanks for sharing!

I like it. I don't understand it all, but I like it. :-)

Great metaphor, Grace! It makes much more sense than the acid-trip-like original...

Robby- You didn't like Through the Looking Glass? AUGH! The beauty is in the metaphor -- whether the reader understands it or not.

"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan the stately pleasure dome decree..." --my favorite poem. Even after my professor explained it, I didn't understand it. It's stil my favorite!

It's also a lyric from the song "Xanadu" by Canadian rock band "Rush".

robby- I should have seen that one coming. I do think Coleridge would have been proud. Tell me you at least had to search for the Rush site...

I thought Olivia Newton John sang Xanadu. :)

Thanks for your comments everyone. My intent was to describe the feeling of, "How in the world did I end up here?"

Yes, Olivia did sing Xanadu. Many Rush fans were bruised for weeks, from smacking our foreheads in anguish whenever we heard Olivia.

Not to get too far from the intent of the original post... I thought your use of this as a metaphor was excellent. Your journey is reminiscent of how Morpheus used the rabbit hole metaphor with Neo in The Matrix:

Neo: "I can't go back, can I?"

Morpheus: "No, but if you could, would you really want to?"

That is the question, is't it.

Just today, I heard through the grapevine that if we would only go back, we could prove that we aren't deceived.

Deceived is such a convenient label.
Where you stand determines what you see.

No, we can't go back.

Bobbie,
I have to believe that God has something for us out there.

I hope you find what He has for you. I've visited your site, and prayed for your family during this transition.

Blessings to you.
