I don't get it.
Maybe I'm too old, or too rural, or just too uncool.
I don't understand the Hollywood-style excitement about "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" winning the Oscar for Best Song.
Why accept this with a wink and a nod?
Maybe it's supposed to be a farce.
Juxtaposed with the reality of pimping and prostitution, it doesn't seem cute to me.
My friend kelly has done exactly that in a powerful post, putting the lyrics of the song alongside the testimony of those oppressed and destroyed by the business of prostitution.
It is worth your time to read what she has written.

I don't usually pay much attention to what the academy does, but kelly's well-written piece certainly caught my attention. As you said, this shouldn't be glorified.
I did not watch the Oscars probably for many of the same reasons that you dislike it.
Thanks for the link. It is very disturbing to see what is glorified in our culture. Some things are just never funny, and one of them is innocent kids caught up in prostitution.
Thanks for your comment David. Sometimes I think I'm just out of step. It's hard to understand why some things are considered acceptable.
I'd never heard of that song until after it won and made such big headlines doing so. It falls into a genre of music that I don't listen to exactly because most of it preaches messages just like this one. It's sad the sort of things our society values. Lately, it seems that drugs and sex are both right at the top of that list.
